Summer 2008 Updates to Derelict London
Expect alot to be added here over the next few weeks/months............

Thats me with Paul Ross and Jo Good on The Breakfast Show -  9 May 08

SE London Red Vans
Somthing that is not quite derelict but but dont look too healthy. These red vans are spotted parked around Brixton and Dulwich butrarely seen
being driven around. Local folklore thinks there is something sinister about them and a guy who drinks in a Camberwell boozer once went as far
as saying they were undercover spies camped in them. (But....im sure its all gossip and that these vans provide a decent service).

Hanworth Park
More derelict sporting facilities. Decaying tennis courts & bowling green in SW London

Mortlake
The Level Crossing Centre - this up until recently was a drop in centre for adults with mental illness. Debbie writes: "The building
was grim inside (although quite ok looking from the outside) and was going to cost a fortune to refurbish it so it was closed and
the services there moved elsewhere."

Petrol Filling Stations
A section that Im working on dedicated to the decline of the traditional filling station.

Shooters Hill - Severndroog Castle
Some interior pics to accompany the ones already on the castle in the Various Buildings Section.

Brixton
Grafitti found inside of an old squat advocating strong cider over racist supremacy

Forest Hill
A local regularly puts these notes all over an old derelict cafe window

Crystal Palace
Further to requests and following the pics of the remains of the palace  in the book and elsewhere in the site heres a few more

East Dulwich - Concrete House
New pics showing this Derelict London favourite in even worse condition. Dont get excited by the
recent scaffolding - its compulsory emergency works under Health & Safety to stop the building
collapsing into the road carried out by Southwark Council - their invoice is stuck to the outside wall
for the attention of the owner whose whereabouts is unknown.

Camden Town - Palmers Pet Shop
Unglamourous interior shot of the old pet shop with a more interesting exterior and history which
has a been many people's  favourite of my book. I took this when recording an interview outside for
Radio 4 Today Programme along with Ian Sinclair.

Camberwell - William IV
A pub from the South of the River section has undergone an unusual transformation by a local arts project
and covered in white camoflage material. The stuff used by the army when fighting in snow covered areas.
(the "before and after pics are in the pubs section)

Camden Town - Aftermath of the Great Fire of Camden 2008
One of the biggest news events of Nth London for a while has wrecked this part of the market.
The remains of the blue building above right used to be the Canaervon Castle Pub (aka the Firkin)
a place that always had live bands on a Sat afternoon. Laterly it became a large clothes shop.

Camden Town - The Hawley Arms (front and back view)
Just before the fire this pub was a great packed boozer. A loud jukebox, great photos of bands on
the walls and was a haunt of Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss and the resulting media scrum outside.

Vauxhall - The George and Dragon
Set in the middle of a housing estate this was the only pub in London to have its own swimming pool!

Peckham - Pharoahs

Oval - The Surrey Tavern

New Cross - Duke of Albany
This pub was used In the film Shaun of The Dead and known in the film as The Winchester Arms.

Peckham - Bricklayers Arms

Forest Hill
This is where I really need your help - this intriguing building is facing the platform at Forest Hill
Railway Station but I have no idea of what purpose the building served. This entrance is quite
high up and the doorway is only accessed by a metal fire escape style staircase.

Hanworth
World War Two pillbox buried in undergrowth. This was presumably positioned here to protect the
adjacent Hanworth Park House

Deptford
Interesting shell of a building

Forest Hill

Old Street

Peckham

 Kennedys Sausages
More derelict branchs of the much loved SE London sausage shops:

Peckham

Walworth

Peckham

Greenwich

Forest Hill

Chalk Farm

Golborne Road
I love this tall mural on the side of a restaurant. Not derelict but a great picture.

Nunhead Cemetery
Further to pics in the book and the cemetery section heres a few more

Notting Hill - The Leinster

Waterloo

More to be added very soon..............
